Description

Dominating the center of the city, right next to the Temple of the Tooth, is the picturesque Kandy Lake (Kiri Muhuda). It is a decorative artificial lake built in 1807 by Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the last ruler of the Kandyan kingdom.

A shaded walking path traces the entire 3km perimeter of the lake, offering a peaceful escape from the noisy city traffic. Walk beneath large, old trees, spot massive monitor lizards resting by the water, pelicans diving for fish, and enjoy the distinct white "clouds wall" (Walakulu Bemma) that guards the edge of the water.
