Description

Located a short drive from Kandy city center in a loop of the Mahaweli River, the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya are the finest of their kind in Asia. Originally established as a pleasure garden for Kandyan royalty, they were expanded by the British into a massive 147-acre botanical marvel.

The gardens contain over 4,000 species of plants. The absolute highlights include striking avenues of towering royal palms, an incredible collection of exotic orchids, a massive giant Javan fig tree extending like a natural tent over the massive lawn, and dramatic groves of giant bamboo.
